Does Biofeedback hurt?
No, Biofeedback is a non-invasive form of treatment whereby sensors are attached to the body for recording biological information. This information is then displayed on the equipment monitors to provide a variety of readings--feedback-- for the patient to observe.
How does biofeedback help me?
Biofeedback can be like a mirror for individuals to help them become more aware of their psychophysiological processes. Electronic monitoring of (ever-changing) biological conditions such as muscle tension, skin surface temperature, brain wave activity, galvanic skin response (anxiety), blood pressure, and heart rate can be enlightening: immediate awareness of one's own psychophysiological processes allows one to deliberately change them.
During the treatment sessions, biofeedback procedures help the brain to release good chemicals that act like medication.
What should I expect during a session?
Your first appointment will include a comprehensive Initial Consultation, biofeedback assessment of your problem using the equipment, educational information about our program, and a treatment plan of your unique condition and difficulties is developed. In subsequent sessions, our experts will train you how to control physical changes in your body that usually occur involuntarily in order to help you with your specific condition using the biofeedback equipment. You will also be guided through a relaxation session at every visit.
What is the goal of biofeedback treatment?
The goal of the biofeedback program is to help patients modify inappropriate responses and self-regulate their physiological process in order to achieve homeostasis (equilibrium). It is simply counter-productive to brace muscles, accelerate heart rate, and raise blood pressure in the presence of an unchangeable stressor. By training the patient to deliberately regulate muscle activity, electrodermal responses, vascular responses, heart rate, and blood pressure, the patient is essentially controlling their reaction to stress/pain. The need for medication to control stress or pain is reduced or eliminated. The different biofeedback modalities are used to promote the effect of different medications.
